No Action Commands

No Action Commands is a full playthrough challenge run of Paper Mario, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Bug Fables. In this challenge the player plays through the game without executing any Action Commands. This includes the Action Commands for any attacks or Special Moves, Guards or Superguards (Blocks or Super Blocks in Bug Fables), and Stylish moves. First Strikes are still allowed as long as no Action Commands are executed. Since the Iron Clefts in Chapter 3 of TTYD require a successful Gulp Action Command to defeat, an exception can be made for them.

Tips & Tricks

  • Since no Action Commands can be executed, the player should use moves that don't rely heavily on Action Commands. Strong single-hit attacks such as Power Jump often work best. Obviously, any moves that have no effect with a failed Action Command should never be used.
  • Since items don't require any Action Commands, they tend to be more useful in this run. Damaging items in particular can be very helpful, especially early on when the player doesn't have access to many ways to increase their damage output.
  • Similarly, in Paper Mario 64, Star Powers don't require Action Commands, so they also can be very useful. However, most Special Moves in TTYD are almost if not entirely useless without Action Commands.
  • Since Guards and Superguards are not allowed, the player should be careful when fighting enemies or bosses with attacks that can inflict status effects. If they need to take a hit from such an attack, the Feeling Fine badges can eliminate the risk of getting inflicted with certain status effects. It's also worth noting that Sweet Treat can still cure most status effects even without any healing.
  • Since partner attacks don't require Action Commands to reach their full power when used as a First Strike, they are typically the best First Strike options.
