Mario Alone

Mario Alone is a full playthrough challenge run of Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. In this challenge the player plays through the game without letting any partner act in battle whatsoever. The only exceptions to this rule are scripted story progressing encounters that cannot be beaten by the use of items, Superguarding, special moves, etc. and require the use of a partner ability, like the Iron Clefts fight in Chapter 3 of TTYD. If Grubba enforces the "Mario cannot attack" special condition, the player must accept defeat, run away, or reset and try to get another condition.

Rules

Paper Mario

  • Always select "Do Nothing" during the partner's turn in battle.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

  • Always bring a fallen partner into battle. If that's not possible, let one fall as soon as possible. The player can choose how to handle this situation in different ways. Either by:
    • 1. Double switching to the same partner until they reach 0 HP.
    • 2. Defend/Appeal with both Mario and partner until the partner reaches 0 HP.
    • 3. Defend/Appeal or double switch with the partner while letting Mario continue the battle as normal.
  • Do keep in mind that option 3 shouldn't be abused and the player should still try to bring a fallen partner into battle except if they are fighting Smorg or Shadow Queen Phase 3, as there is no way to damage the partner before those fights.

Optional

  • The following Codes will set all of the partners max HP to 0 in TTYD, eliminating the need to make a partner fall at the start of battle, possibly making this challenge harder but fairer:

Tips & Tricks

  • The player shouldn't equip/upgrade anything regarding partners, as they aren't allowed to act.
  • If the player decides against the use of codes, the best way to let a partner reach 0 HP before an important fight is to let them fall in a random battle beforehand.
  • The player should always know what kind of enemies they will be fighting next, as some enemies are really hard to damage without the proper badges or items.
  • Taking a more defensive approach to fights is a good idea, as the player's turns in battle are effectively cut in half. The player should keep in mind that if they heal Mario, the enemies can immediately attack again. If a slip-up happens (like a miscalculation or missed Superguard), the player should be prepared to handle that situation with items or other safety measures.
  • It also may be beneficial to defeat enemies as quickly as possible to minimize the damage that Mario takes. Using Special Moves or multi-target attacks is often the best way to accomplish this.
