Level -1
by jdw3621 24 Feb 2024 15:34
Level -1 is a full-game challenge run in both Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. This run has all the rules of a Level Zero run; only BP can be selected during level-ups, no Badges that cost BP can be equipped, and no partners can be upgraded. In addition, you must use Chet Rippo to lower Mario's HP to 5 as soon as possible: when the south side of Toad Town opens in PM64, and when you acquire Bobbery in TTYD. In TTYD this challenge can alternatively be run as Level Zero Double Damage, in which Double Pain is equipped as soon as it can be acquired (after Chapter 1). The difference between these settings is negligible since completion credits don't distinguish between the two, and they are often combined due to Chet Rippo is accessed rather late in TTYD. Having Double Pain equipped simulates having 5 HP until it can be lowered. It can also be run without using FP for a "Level -2" run.
Level 1
by Thomass487 24 Mar 2024 11:49
Level 1 is a full playthrough challenge run of Paper Mario, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and Super Paper Mario. In this challenge the player plays through the game while only upgrading BP, only equipping Badges that cost 3 BP in total and not ranking up Partners (64/TTYD) or not gaining experience with codes or the Shell Shock Negative Points glitch (SPM). Level 1 can be seen as a step up in difficulty from the Stat Only runs. In order to complete a Level 1 run in Paper Mario, the player should avoid leveling past Level 10 due to the BP cap of 30. To accomplish this, most optional encounters must be avoided. In the case of overleveling, the player must choose to upgrade FP and proceed to not have more than 5 FP missing from their maximum FP.
Level 1 Pre-Hooktail Pit
by Kappy0 04 Sep 2024 15:25
Level 1 Pre-Hooktail Pit is the one of the hardest challenges to currently exist in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. This is Pre-Hooktail Pit with one main restriction: Mario must act as if he's at Level 1. At Level 1, you start with 10 HP, 5 FP, and 3 BP. This is a brutal challenge that will test all of your skills as a challenge runner.
Level 1 Prologue Pit
by Kappy0 19 May 2024 17:20
Level 1 Prologue Pit is the second-hardest challenge to currently exist in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and is currently the hardest early Pit challenge. This is Prologue Pit with one main restriction: Mario must act as if he's at Level 1. At Level 1, you start with 10 HP, 5 FP, and 3 BP. This is the ultimate goal for hardcore early Pit challenge runners. It will test you. It will punish you.
Level Zero
by Thomass487 25 Dec 2023 18:42
Level Zero is a full playthrough challenge run of Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. However, it is possible to complete a Level Zero Pit at much earlier points.
Level Zero Scavenge
by jdw3621 15 Feb 2024 06:29
Level Zero Scavenge is a full-game challenge run in both Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. In this run, the player can only level up BP, all badges are banned except those costing 0 BP, and partners cannot be leveled up. In addition, the only items that Mario is allowed to use are those that can be "scavenged" from the environment and enemies. Required purchases, such as the Dried Shroom and Dizzy Dial in the Westside Goods shop can still be made, but those purchased items cannot be used in battle. These restrictions result in a very limited amount of the most powerful items available, unless the player is willing to spend time farming them from enemy steals. In addition, in TTYD, the player can choose to complete the run without taking the Strange Sack, which expands the item inventory to 20.

by Thomass487 25 Mar 2024 18:14
Mario Alone is a full playthrough challenge run of Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. The only exceptions to this rule are scripted story progressing encounters that cannot be beaten by the use of items, Superguarding, special moves, etc. and require the use of a partner ability, like the Iron Clefts fight in Chapter 3 of TTYD. If Grubba enforces the "Mario cannot attack" special condition, the player must accept defeat, run away, or reset and try to get another condition.

The overworld is completely unrestricted due to the amount of Thing stickers you require to complete puzzles.

by miccat87 08 Apr 2024 22:34
No Action Commands is a full playthrough challenge run of Paper Mario, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Bug Fables. This includes the Action Commands for any attacks or Special Moves, Guards or Superguards (Blocks or Super Blocks in Bug Fables), and Stylish moves. First Strikes are still allowed as long as no Action Commands are executed. Since the Iron Clefts in Chapter 3 of TTYD require a successful Gulp Action Command to defeat, an exception can be made for them.

by TraceyMailin 13 Aug 2024 22:31
No Badges is a full playthrough challenge run of Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. In this challenge the player plays through the game without equipping badges at any point. In this challenge, the player must play through the game without letting any of the characters (Mario and partners or Team Snakemouth) take damage or lose HP. As an extra challenge in 64 and TTYD, the player can choose to avoid using Chet Rippo to lower Mario's max HP to 5, as this prevents them from abusing Danger badges. Since it's impossible to completely avoid taking damage in Paper Mario's Prologue, the run doesn't truly begin until Chapter 1.

Slow Go can also be included optionally, although few players wear it as it adds no real difficulty. The player is also not allowed to leave the Pit at any time after entering, as is standard for Pit runs. This is the earliest point in the game at which the challenge can be officially attempted, because the required badges for the Disabled Mario build are all sold by Charlieton in Rogueport after chapter 1.

In this challenge, the player completes the Pit of 100 Trials before obtaining Sweet Treat from standing on the pedestal in front of the Thousand-Year Door for the first time. Since the Pit of 100 Trials normally can't be accessed at this point, players use Paper Mode Storage, Super Jump, or a levitate code to access it, as with any other Prologue early pit challenges. Other glitches such as Hazard Respawn Glitch (HRG) and Ultra Hammer Early (UHE) may or may not be used, to varying degrees of standardization. For example, HRG typically is used while UHE is not.
